“HappyNew Year! Happy New Year!” The employees returned to work and greeted each other cheerfully.

“Happy New Year, Mrs. Majakowski.”

Evelyn Majakowski was dumbfounded and stopped in the doorway to Michaela’s office. She had just wanted to drop off the mail. “H-Happy New Year, Ms. Wittling.” She started to move again and put the envelopes on Michaela’s desk.

All the time she kept staring in wonder at Michaela, who finally burst out laughing. “Yes, it’s really me! How’s your family? Survived the roasted goose?” She grinned.

“G-Goose?” Evelyn Majakowski could not escape stuttering. “Y-Yes, we did. It was really good.”

“It looked like it would be.”

Evelyn Majakowski looked at her as if she were seeing a ghost.

“Uh ... I mean I’m sure it looked it.” Michaela remembered that Evelyn Majakowski did not know anything about her visit on Christmas Eve – and it would have been very difficult to explain. She got up. “Mrs. Majakowski, this year a lot of things are going to change around here. First of all, Ramona ... uh ... Ms. Benckhoff is in America on extended personal leave, so we’ll need to find a replacement for her.”

“She’s ... in America?” Evelyn Majakowski was swaying.

“Take a seat,” Michaela said and led her to one of the heavy leather chairs. She pointed at the cracks in the leather. “Those need refurbishing badly, including the springs. Could you please put that on the repair list?”

“Repair list?” Evelyn Majakowski stammered.

“Don’t you have one? Then make one. A lot of the ceiling lights are burnt out, too.”

“Yes, that’s true,” Evelyn Majakowski said. She tried to get a grip on herself. “The ceiling lights are on! That’s why the office seemed so unfamiliar when I came in.”

Michaela laughed. “That’s probably what everyone thought! So, these things ... I assume you’ll be taking care of them. Just find out what needs to be repaired and have it done. And then ... the desks – these are really not appropriate for work.” She had noticed it when she had worked at Ramona’s desk. “They’re totally outdated, completely not ergonomic. Check the catalogues and see what the suppliers have that’s current. Of course, some better chairs, too. I’m surprised everyone doesn’t have bad backs by now!”

“Well, some have,” Evelyn Majakowski said, still in shock.

“Then make sure those people get special chairs, even better ones than the others. And find out if you can arrange some time at a health resort for them.”

“Ms. Wittling, I –” Evelyn Majakowski looked up at her from her chair. “I just don’t understand.”

“Please call me Michaela,” Michaela said. “You’ve known me from an early age, and you always used to call me that.”

“Yes.” Evelyn Majakowski got up. “Now I’m going to leave this office and then come back again. I must have gone through the wrong door.”

“You haven’t.” Michaela grabbed her oldest employee by the shoulders and laughingly looked into her face. “And you’re not dreaming either. Even if Christmas is over now, starting today, every day will be Christmas for me, the whole year.
